How many times have we heard someone say, “The Bibles says that God helps those who help themselves“? LOTS!
I’m ashamed to say that, before I knew better, that I have even said it!
You will notice there is no Bible verse listed as I usually do. Why? Because the saying is not in or from the Bible. You will find it no where or any similar reference in the Bible!
It’s actually a quote from the 1757 issue of Poor Richard’s Almanac, written by Ben Franklin, inventor, author, one of the father’s of the United States, and one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence.
The quote is the premise that America was built upon and continues to thrive as the underlying premise of our democratic form of government.
As to the Bible — In truth, the quote is contrary to the Bible and it’s message to believers, whether Jewish or Christian. Both the Old Testament (for example, 2 Chronicles 13:18; Isaiah 50:10; and Daniel 6:23) and New Testament (2 Corinthians 1:9, for instance) expound that believers should trust God for both guidance and to supply our needs.
